What happened after Young Feller left the Nursery was horrible and you can see the end of it sitting there on the steps. Derek was left in the Nursery when Young Feller came to town, shocked but ready to carry on his job, believing his lovely boy would come back.
He told me all this after the final breakdown, unreeling his mind like a tape with only one thing on it, the same thing wept out in a hundred different ways. The boy made wreckage of him; he got whatever he wanted from Derek, knowing exactly which psychic buttons to press; it was the most complete response conditioning ever achieved. Scientists would call it an elegant procedure, their phrase for neat and faultless. I don’t think he meant to wreck Derek but when the end came he was too much involved with his Group to think of the pawn. Derek was minor prepared, used and forgotten. He was only human, you see. He didn’t matter.
So there was Derek in Westerton and Young Feller in Melbourne. He’d acted at the first sign of good burning weather but now he needed Derek in the city with him, so he went to his home. Derek had a place in Malvern then, a six-room 3A Special since he was pretty senior, and that’s where Petra was with the two boys. I was seconded up-country at the time, so I only know this part from Petra, and you’ll soon see why she doesn’t want to listen to it or talk about it.
The boys were at school; she was alone in the house when Young Feller knocked at the door. With him looking younger than his true age, what she saw was a schoolboy dressed in summer shorts and shirt and long socks, with the badge of a private school on his shirt pocket, looking nervous and apologetic while he twisted his cap in his hands. This was the morning after he ran from the Nursery; I know that because later on, when I knew more about the things he did, I checked news files and found out that a boy from that school had been attacked and stripped that same morning and left in a back lane with a workingman’s clothes thrown over him and his own taken away. The man’s clothes had a letter in the pocket with a Westerton address on it, and that man had reported being mugged and stripped in Westerton the night before. You can see that the kid was mighty efficient, getting to Melbourne as fast as that.
He spun Petra a yarn about Derek training him for sports and telling him to look him up when the holidays were over. For all she knew, this could be true, since she didn’t know much of what Derek did away from home. She had a fair idea of his bed hopping but not how much of it and he used Departmental secrecy to keep her in the dark about where he was and when.
